Access to the club would be possible from any modern (and text) web
browser. Random people visiting the domain would be greeted with a
fake web page that would be designed to look like an old 1990s
abandoned anime website (like the anime web turnpike). Existing users
would be able to log-in by clicking on a hidden link behind an image
of a cute anime girl (or something like that. Perhaps a small icon).

When inviting friends: You would send a link to the website that
includes an invite code in the url. This would direct them to a page
explaining club rules (list will be very short) along with an "I agree
to follow the rules" button. Once they agree an account will be
created for them using a randomly generated name from a pre-existing
list of names.

- Anonymous log-in / invite system

Only invited users will be able to use the website similar to cock
mail and other invite-only services. A randomly generated name will be
assigned to accounts when first created. Users will be required to
log-in before accessing the site. But they will be unable to see each
other's usernames and all communication on the website will be fully
anonymous to everyone excluding admins (and only when admins log-in to
admin tools).

There should be no need for a mod team (at least at first) since club
members will most likely be good people that do not require
moderation. Plus we won't have issues with the usual ddos/hit-and-run
CP spam.

- Anonymous imageboard / forum

An open discussion forum all members based upon imageboard software.
With some modifications to modernize it without making it into crappy
cellphone-first "platform". Cell phone access will be allowed of
course and an attempt will be made to make it as painless as possible
without the need of an "app". So club members will be able to check-in
while on the go.

- Torrent tracker / file sharing.

A torrent tracker to index and curate releases for media will be part
of the site. But it will not be "private" as such. Meaning club
torrents will be allowed to be posted on other public trackers like
nyaa and *tosho. Also existing torrents can be imported. The idea is
to not split seeds between our own club and the wider internet. While
also ensuring only the best of the best possible releases for each
type of content is hosted for club members. Thus preventing them from
wading through mountains of garbage.

Other file sharing services may be offered in the future. Like XDCC
bot network and in time a new p2p network I've been working on. We'd
also try to offer access to things like torrents via dedicated i2p
seeds/nodes. I'd also like to start an IPFS fileshare in the future.
But the details of such things can be discussed among founding
members.

- Git repos / collab tools

Free git repos will be offered to each user so they will be able to
collab on projects (fansubbing, scanlations etc). While I would prefer
this to remain 100% anon as the rest of this site. It may not be
possible. Will have to wait and see if we can do anon git repos. This
will be important for sharing subtitle scripts and WIP stuff. Along
with any software we decide to fork in the future to support our own
work.

- Real time chat

I feel real time chat can kill activity on forums/boards and are an
awful place for hosting content. However, in our case I think we can
have this (probably powered by IRC+Mumble or some other voice service)
while keeping our board active. Real-time chat is intended to be used
so people can work together on their projects without doing it
off-site on platforms like discord.

- Image Gallery / Booru

A booru should be offered for sharing fan art and other image content
from popular Japanese and western creators.

- Games/Arcade

An old school flash arcade will be added with the intention of
archiving old flash games and new web games from Doujin creators.
Along with file sharing sections for popular games and
cracks/emulators/related software for said games.

- Manga Reader

A way to read/upload scanlations on-site similar to mangadex.

- Video streaming

A video streaming server for watch-together nights. Will include
real-time chat room. All anonymous of course. Will be hosted onsite
instead of relying on one of the usual anon streaming services. (I've
basically already coded this just need a place to host it).

## Rules

There will be rules. Mostly the usual ones for sekrit clubs. Mainly;
Don't talk about the club outside of the club. Be friendly to each
other. Work together when possible and do not invite anyone you know
will be a problem.

Invites will be handed out by the admin using a sekrit formula. Most
users should except to get 1-3 invites within a day of initially
joining so that they can invite friends and people they think would
contribute to the spirit of the community we're hoping to build. Once
an initial user base of about 15-20 is established we will pause to
allowed the club to develop its own culture. Then look into opening
invites again in the future. The idea is to eventually build up a
large online club that no one knows about outside of us. The hope is
we'll create a new friendly culture that reminds of us "the good old
days".

I feel this quasi-private club will work better than existing public
platforms or private platforms. We do not advertise ourselves. We grow
only by word of mouth and our internal invite system. We do not have
to worry about random hit and run spamming attacks, ddos'ing, DMCA
notices and all the usual issues with public places. We do not have to
worry about the elitism of private trackers or the fact that they go
against our core values (e.g. Data should be free to all). Since
anything produced by our club can be quietly added to public trackers
or posted on places like 4/a/ without linking back to the club itself.

In time perhaps we could build up our own little "cabal" and fix the
situation we're in with the wider fansub/scanlation community these
days.

Last note: Invited users will be tied to the users that invited them
for some time after they initially join. This means if you invite
someone that shits the place up expect to be punished. If we're forced
to ban an account you invited we may need to put you in time-out or
otherwise punish you somehow to ensure this doesn't happen again. I
understand no one is perfect and sometimes people just do stupid
things. But you put the rest of the club at great risk when you invite
such people into the club. So you must be held responsible for their
actions as well. My hope is this is never a regular problem as I would
prefer to avoid any kind of drama of that nature.

## Final thoughts

This will require multiple web servers. At least one domain name
(perhaps more). Along with some custom coding work and image work
(banners and icons mostly). I am currently working on securing funds
to pay for all of this crap. The coding I can do myself. The funding I
can probably handle early on because the club will be small and most
content will be hosted via torrents and such. But I do not want to dox
myself to a registrar to secure a domain name. So I need to set-up an
LLC before I do anything else. Which is about $200. Once I've done
that I'll get started on buying all the VPSs we need to host it. We
will not be using commercial anti-ddos/proxy services like cloudflare.
Instead, I will set-up our own reverse proxies using multiple VPSs.
This ensures we can not be taken down and our users are safer since
all our traffic isn't going through places like AWS, Google,
Cloudflare and similar big /tech/ platforms.

Also, while I _hate_ asking for donations at some point in the future
I may ask club members to chip in and help pay for monthly hosting
costs and such. Should this come to pass I will keep itemized list of
what the monies are spent on. I will also ensure that a portion of it
gets donated to mangaka and other creators of content that the club
watches/translates or otherwise hosts.

The goal is to be a one stop shop for curated lists of the following;

- Fansubs / properly translated anime series
- Manga
- doujin works (manga, anime, games etc.)
- /jp/ music
- /jp/ games
- LNs and other books
- Software for scanlation/fansubbing/other otaku interests
- Anything else related to otaku interests

Along with being a place for creators that aren't riding the social
media hype train to work together in peace. I hope in time we will
flourish into a friendly community that produces a lot of original
content.

Finally; Note I wrote the above 2 months ago and didn't proof read it before posting. So I'm sorry for any errors I didn't catch. There was a back and forth with a few friends who brought up some things that could be changed/tweaked. Some of which I agree with. But I need to refresh myself as I've been away for the last month or so.

In other words; everything above is subject to change if you think I'm doing something dumb or we can do better.

My goal is to have core group of "founders" help out with launching the place. From there they can invite friends. Who will invite friends of friends. In time we have a small but thriving community sharing content together and discussing it without all the riff-raff from the greater web/internet.

I do not want to moderate a community. I want users that do not need moderation.

Also I never want to put ads on the site. I want to start a site 100% run by the community. Either through donations or some other method that doesn't require embedding Google/ad company spyware or otherwise selling user data. I will never sacrifice the privacy of the users in an attempt to make money off of it. I'd rather shut it down if it came to that (or pass it on to someone that could afford to continue running it).

This sounds like a great idea and something I'm definitely interested in. The bad part is that I don't really know many people who would usefully contribute to such an endeavor. I know like one guy who would make use of it and can keep a secret, but probably wouldn't be able to help very much otherwise.

The manga reader is something I'm having trouble figuring out the exact usefulness of, other than simply being a convenient place to find recommended series to read and in-circle sharing of private doujin uploads and the like. MangaDex would largely beat it out for most use cases even for members and it could be a decent resource drain for little gain.

If you need funding assistance I'd be happy to help out of course, but we run into the same issue as before where donating anonymously would be hard. If you come up with some way for me to get money to you I'd do it. Feel free to use our existing hosting space if you need to as well.

Hey thanks for quick reply. I just got woken up by a torrent I've been downloading for the last 10 days finishing. Finally had enough spare space to grab the 3TB collection of J-core FLACS.

I agree on the mangadex-clone part. I really thought hard about deleting it from the text before I sent it off. Perhaps that's something that might be useful MUCH later. I was mainly hoping to have an easy way for people to dump and comment on scanlations. But I think threads on the boards will suffice for now along with hosting cbz/cbr versions on the tracker. Similarly, the P2P stuff outside of the tracker (and maybe XDCC bots) is something I maybe should omit for now. But I really want to improve and go beyond torrents in the near future. Hopefully, I will be able to finish IPFS since the devs have basically stopped working on it and figure out some way to use torrents as "seeds" for it.

For the torrent tracker itself; I plan to improve upon the old nyaa.panstu UI a lot. For example, adding a way for people to include DDL and XDCC bot access to the same files/archive in their posts. But I'll save the idea stuff for later.

I was mainly hopeful you might know of some TLers and similar folks that are as fed up with the state of things as we seem to be. The "killer feature" of the place is going to be the git+collab section for sure. I plan to make it easy for people to collab together with improved tools. Since most of their workflow these days seems to be uploading files back and forth through discord or email like we were forced to. Git would improve stuff like multiple people working on the same subtitles at the same time. But I am sure it could be used for scanlations as well. Since you can host raws you're working on and half down pages in repos as well. Just tell me where the tools are lacking and I can whip up some hacks to the interface for you or anyone else.

I thought a quiet private area to work on this stuff without relying on MEGA, Discord, and the other usual places would help people save time and collaborate. That's why I was hoping people my be interested in giving this a try. Word of the sekrit club will leak out at some point down the road. But if we can get 10-15 people onboard early and give them a quiet place to work together I think they would appreciate it a lot. Assuming the tools are good and the servers are stable.

I think the best thing to do initially is to focus on building tools and the torrent tracker. For the torrent tracker what I would do is allow more content than nyaa and other anime trackers at the moment. Meaning that things like cracked Photoshop, OSs and other "pro tools" from the commercial worlds are offered with known good cracks. In addition, we could host open source software in the gitrepos. Where we wouldn't have to manage them directly unless we really wanted to do so. Since we could pull down that stuff from public repos.

I also _really_ want to host some kind of legacy archive for historical fansub releases from back in the day. Most likely on the tracker. Since I just found a bunch I had stored on CD-R and I think it's important that someone does this so they aren't lost to the sands of time. A lot of those old releases have not had their scripts OCR'd yet. Nor is anyone particularly interested in archiving them unless they came from the last softsub+x264 era.

Do you have any thoughts about how tools geared towards translating media could be improved? Anything you'd really like to see as far as collab focused software in that area?

Another thought: How useful to you think real-time chat would be for collab work? Do people these days really want voice chat? Because I was thinking it might be best to do collab stuff through long running threads on the boards or git instead. That way anyone could jump in and help and everyone is kept up to date on the latest changes. I am just worried is too much focus is on usernames that people with start to clique up and start falling into the namefag routine. So I'd really like to keep things anonymous where possible.

I am thinking of reaching out to the guy from Kissu that lurks in our IRC channel to see if he wants to become a "founding member". I know he archives stuff from time to time and everyone other there seems nice. I may ask the admin of kissu if he's interested to. But you have more contacts with scanlators. So I was hoping you might know of more people that would be interested in joining. I know such people are becoming pretty rare these days.

Basically, this should be a private club for creators starting out I guess. Later on we can see about inviting people that don't create but enjoy discussion and consuming content. As such people can be trained to help out and continue the spirit of TLing this type of content for free when all of us are too old and too dead.

I also want to assure you I'm not going to right long shitposty rants like I did for the Onimai release. I want to foster a friendly community where all of that crap that's ruined all my usual haunts doesn't happen everyday. Not because we're enforcing rules and actively moderating things. I want to do it where the community polices itself. In other words: They can have fun and even shitpost together but everyone knows it isn't serious and doesn't take things personal or starts flaming each other.

I do need help with funding all of the time. I'm going to setup the LLC myself though. Since once the LLC is set-up it'll be much easier to deal with funding while everyone can continue to remain anonymous. We're going to run this club as a 501(c) charity organization. Which means we don't have to pay taxes and the LLC becomes a "legal fiction". Meaning it can accept payments, make payments, and "own" assets like domain name(s).

I do like some of your names. We'll have to see what is available on the domain name market these days after we make a decision. As much as I'd like to snag a .moe domain last time I checked most of the good ones were taken and the prices for them went through the roof at some point. So if you can think up any TLDs other than .moe I'm all (kitten) ears. (sorry we watched Moon Phase tonight friend has never seen it). The shorter the better of course. Probably the more weebish the better as well. So give it some more thought and see if you can think up any others. I'll try to think up a good list myself.

In my experience each person will always have at least 1-3 friends interested in getting in on the ground floor of something like that or joining an established club once the clubs is active. So what I'm going to do for now while I'm waiting to secure funds for the LLC is start working on the website and its interface. I'll set up a small sample site on the existing webspace we have and let you check it out. I really need to brush up on how git's web interface works and see what it will take to merge its user DB with that of whatever user DB I'm going to use to power everything else. It shouldn't be that hard. I also need to work out a nice secure invite system that can't be abused.

One more idea I had;

I said before that when a new user is invited they'll be assigned a random name from a list of possible names. My plan for the moment is to make up a list of anime girl (and boy?) names. Probably scrape the top 100-500 from AniDB or something. A new user will get assigned one of those names then it'd be placed in a black list so it could never be used again. This will prevent two users from ending up with the same name hopefully.

Anyway, I was thinking of taking this a step further and having some fun with AI image generation. Basically, we'd also generate a small image of an anime girl for them (or multiple) that they could pick and choose from. Once they've picked on they're locked into that "character" for life. I thought it might be fun since we're all little girls anyway, right? But I could always do without that feature as well.

The whole thinking on the name thing is this: Prevent them from using an existing name they're already known under. Prevent people from bringing up offsite drama or becoming cliques due to past interaction. On the off chance two people get invited at the same time or something. Of course they'll probably discuss this off-site anyway. But I thought it would be fun and would inspire people to make OC based upon whatever random girl they were assigned by the AI. Let me know what you think.

Another thing; I could easily set-up a 24/7 radio station provided we had the space and were willing to host audio files. It would be a button in the header of every page and allow any lurker to tune in and listen to the radio. They could also upload their favorite music tracks to share them with everyone else. This would not consume many resources (aside from space which would be minimal problem with most VPS providers). They would also be able to plug-in the url to their local media player of course.

I lied, one last thing: For torrent listings of content I planned to eventually build a scraper for AniDB (and other sources of meta data) that would be pulled and added to the page for each release. Say an anime season is uploaded. The tracker would pull the relevant data from AniDB and people could read it using a nice UI (probably hidden behind a tab). The idea is to have one PROPER release for every series. Or perhaps one listing for each series with the different so-called PROPER release (x265 version, x264 10-bit version, BDRemux etc) available from either different tabs or multiple links+stats in the current UI. Community could vote to change these at any time of course. In case a better release came out or some kind of v2 release came out later (e.g. one that includes dub tracks, more subtitle tracks and such).

That's all the thoughts I have for the moment. I want to make a goal to get this up by the next holiday season (or summer if I can swing that). There are areas where I need help though. Mainly, with images since that's never been my strong suit. Nothing overly complicated just banners and icons and things of that nature. I can handle all the coding work and the UI.

I'd _really_ _really_ like some kind of mascot. Since -tans are cute and it could be used as a way to signal to each other in the wild without bringing attention to the site's url or even the fact that the community exists. I don't want this to turn into the situation with private trackers where they're being advertised on /g/ and reddit everything. I was hoping the "exclusive" feel of the place might attract the type of people we're looking for. If you take a look at Kissu that's kind of the vibe I'm going for. But not quiet as laid back. Meaning besides pure discussion I'm hoping to attract people that actually like to work together on projects or are into collecting high quality versions of things like raws.

As mentioned in some other threads tonight I am working on a new container format as well. Instead of doing yet-another mangadex clone I decided it would be cool to improve the way manga is distributed. My goal is to build a new container format around MKV that allows for interactive "videos" which are really just scans stored inside of a file being played on a timeline. This would allow us to do stuff like have softsubs/translations for manga and other image based content. While also storing the original scans within the same files. Which would be helpful for those learning Japanese or English as a second language.

But again I digress. More on that later when it's ready.

On Mangadex: I see several ways it could be improved and I understand the appeal of reading manga in your browser (I do it all of the time). But I've moved on to wanting to make a proper multimedia file format for manga that isn't just a .zip/.rar file. I'll tell you about that later once I've figured out how I'm going to do it.

My thinking right now is I compile a large database of Japanese girl names using one of those databases people use to choose a name for their kid. Combined with a large list of known last names. Which means some people might get lucky and be related!

Merging a bunch of existing software with a custom user database like this isn't as much trouble as you might think. I did it all of the time back in the day for clients that were running things like wikimedia+phpbb and wanted to share user accounts across them.

My hope with this is that if we start with a core user base of say 10 known good posters on places like kissu. That they'll only invite friends they know through other means that they think will fit in with the existing culture. From there we get friends-of-friends and keep building out member wise. This allows for a slow build of users that would be easy to moderate when required. We focus from day one on keeping the peace instead of having a free-for-all. Most of these alt-chans don't do well because they spam the link all over the place and are willing to take in anyone as long as it produces PPH.

The main focus isn't the discussion either although that's a large part of why I want to do this. The main goal is to have a large database of fun things that we share and curate together. Hopefully, in time it grows into the largest open database of fun things for Otakus.

The only reason this already isn't in beta is the fact that I haven't set-up the LLC yet and secured hosting. I really hate having to set-up the LLC. But it's the only way to ensure;
1) The owner doesn't get doxed right away and attacked by usual methods
2) We can retain control of the domain name and all other assets associated with the websiste. If we didn't have an LLC and bought the domain from a re-seller they would technically own it and would be able to pull the rug out from under us at any time.

The plan I have actually revolves around multiple domain names. There will be a fake website/domain that's really a portal to get into the real one for those that know how. There will be a domain/website for the club and database of media itself. Finally, there would be a third domain name the invite system would run through. That way if someone gets to the link too late they don't know where the actual club is.

It's kind of like private trackers except instead of enforcing members to maintain ratio they are instead just being asked to be respected members of the community. Once you're in it'll be very hard to do something that gets you kicked out. You'd have to be blatantly attempting to ruin the place. The torrent side of things would be open to outsiders via magnet links and the .torrent files would not contain the domain name of the real club. It would instead be yet another fake domain that only deals with helping you find peers to download from.

In time I'd like to move away from torrents all together but currently it's the best thing we have. But the solution to ensuring files are shared forever isn't enforcing some ratio, logging member's IP addresses and attempting to hack the torrent protocol into a "private" thing (which it'll never be). The key to ensuring stuff is shared forever is having a friendly community/club where you can always request a re-seed.

I'm just trying to capture some of the feeling over the good old days. In my mind that means we slowly grow membership like an IRL word-of-mouth club and we make damn sure it's never mentioned on mainstream social media or the usual places. In fact, I'd go so far as to say if a member was caught talking about the club outside of the club it would be the one of the few things that would ensure they'd be banned forever.

The short version of the above is: We'll grow it out feature wise slowly. The main goal of the original website is;

3) A way for us to create/modify/improve data together on-site. (git server)

After we've established that and a good number of members we can start thinking about things like offering features like mangadex or maybe a club-member only Jellyfin server where you could stream certain titles on a rotating basis. A server like that doesn't cost that much to run and keep going. But it isn't something we need out of the gate.

As for names yes. Once a name is burned it's placed on the wall-of-shame and never used again. I do not foresee us running out of names to use for a long time. I prefer to not have them at all. But we need some type of way to keep the bots out and associated riff-raft. Making up names and anime girl avatars to go with them seemed like a fun way to do it. This way everyone is starting with clean slate in the few places names might be used. The vast majority of stuff would be done totally anonymously whenever possible.

We've talked about trying this on kissu itself and the compromise made was the existence of /chat/ that links to it. The last time this was brought up I mentioned how some old forums had chat boxes in them, but they were quite small and limited and mostly used for updates. But, I think kissu's implementation of /chat/ is pretty good. It does take a conscious effort to move conversations to kissu proper sometimes, but instant chat is also good at inspiring thread or posts.

Yeah, we have an old and essentially abandoned qa booru. The main issue with this is that the main site that allowed people to easily create boorus (even gelbooru used it) stopped accepting new ones a few years ago and it's just a matter of time until it dies due to the guy's lack of interest.

Warez stuff can be very tricky to host and it brings with it a lot of attention you may want to avoid. Sharing games with internet friends is good, sharing a link and then 50,000 unrelated people throwing the link around is a whole other story. This is similar to my opinion of /secret/ in that it allows controversial threads and it's harmless because it's reserved for kissu users that know of it as opposed to people visiting kissu specifically for it. I guess the question is whether you not you want people to land on the site when they google something like "naruto manga download free"
Hosting /f/lash is easy enough, though.

Well obviously the imageboard thing is there, but someone had made a /qa/ anonymous forum a few years ago and I can't remember what it was called or how it worked. So, the concept does exist.

Yeah, this really isn't something I can comment on. Since you were talking about stuff in the good ol' days, I remember websites having their own FTP servers for people to share stuff on and it's where I got most of my video game music back in the early 00s. I used software for it, but browsers have supported browsing and downloading from FTPs for a very long time now. This is something that needs heavy restrictions on it for the uploading part obviously. Torrents are good, too, yeah.

Oh, neat. We have a fork of cytube that supports anonymity ( https://theatre.kissu.moe/kiss/yukkuri )and it seems to do everything we want it to, even supports twitch streaming so you can stream shows from there.

I think the important thing in all of this is a centralized location that everything links back to. For kissu it's... well, kissu.

Given my high investment into kissu I often have some emotional reservations about this subject, but having read through the entirety of the posts, how much I feel my own vision aligns with your goals for the site, and the nature of content that require more secrecy I think that there's much more value in trying to help out than ignoring it.

My main worry is if you'll be able gather that group of 15-20 creators for the foundation of the site that align themselves enough with the site and have patience enough to work together to build things from the ground up. The only real issue for myself being a part of that group is that I'm not really a 'creator' in the sense of making releases and such or have the know-how to hop right into being one. So I'd probably skip out on the first round of invites so that someone more in-the-know and useful could contribute to the site's foundation instead. If there's one thing I'd want to suggest though it's that maybe after the initial foundation and grace period for establishing the site, customs, and creation methodology of the core users maybe a second round of invites for those that may be interested in learning or missed out on the first round would be appreciated. Though maybe that'd go against the secret nature of things, but if it's restricted to still people that knew about the first round I don't think it'd compromise the site. Also if this is meant to be a bi-lingual group should getting a head start on that be a thing from the get-go by including members from the JP community into the core group? Or are you already planning on and have ideas for doing that.

Concerning functionality of the site itself there's some questions I have with the video streaming feature. Maybe I'm thinking too large-scale for it to really be an issue but I find that while streaming locally for kissu we can run into bandwith issues with relatively large files and enough people watching. So I have to wonder if this itself would be a fairly expensive endeavor to start out with for the site considering how much stuff like AWS and Youtube cost for their companies. The booru too seems like an expensive addition, but not money-wise like video streaming but instead time-wise since to make a fairly robust booru you need to have a lot of people adding to and tagging all the different art that gets put into it which doesn't seem of too much benefit considering existing alternatives but maybe there's something I'm missing there like most of that work gets scraped/automated or whatnot. Allowing torrents on the tracker to be shared with people outside of the community is simply a really nice policy.

As for the what was apparently seen as the least pressing feature, the manga reader, I had the same thoughts as others at first because I primarily read manga through Honeyview. However, after giving it a bit of extra thought it does seem like something worth looking into more than not. While people will still probably download most of their manga to read, being able to quickly flip through something new to see if it catches your eye or not is a great way to discover new manga to read. And in relation to that something that AB does well which I do like is having their AotF/AotW which puts a spotlight on different series/albums that people may/maynot have heard of and gives them a chance to download any version of it for free. Now there's no need to really make anything free on the site since it's assumed that the people will be trustworthy enough to not screw others over, but having spotlights for all the different forms of media may not be such a bad idea either to expand people's taste.

When it comes to donations I do find myself quite generous in spending on endeavors that I feel are for the betterment of humanity so I'd be willing to support the site if I were in it. Though I feel that's a very shallow way of helping so I'd much rather lean into some of the other ideas you had for learning how to be a more productive member of the community. My favorite potential feature listed was the Wiki, since I think that a collective database of all the knowledge people have been accumulating through their years of creation would bolster the ability of new people to learn. All the little tips and tricks known can be out in the open and maybe further explored/improved on.

This sort of leads into my thoughts on the workings of the community. To be as anti-clique and new-friendly as possible the on-site communications that replace discord is probably the best way to go about it. That way you could implement features into those chats like all logs for all chats accessible to everyone or having new channels for different projects being moderator/community approved so as to not causing excessive splintering. In the same vein being more forum-like with more thread permanence would be good for knowledge archival and allowing new members to read up a bit to get a good feeling for the place. Assigning everyone random names is a great idea since old ones would probably just carry along extra baggage, but when it comes to one's expressiveness I feel as though a profile picture can be seen as the ultimate form of initial impression and self expression a person could have attached to them so a choice between a few AI generated anime girls may cause issues if the selection doesn't have anything that speaks to the user. Images for banners and stuff I think you want a good general motif for the site first before trying to get those since having one will inspire ideas for people to make content around.

I don't think that this directly correlates to people being peaceful, but not intentionally stirring shit and trying to start trouble maybe. I know I've gotten into passionate arguments with most of my good friends from /qa/ over the years and we've always been able to eventually come to a consensus or settle our differences and move on. Which I guess itself can be seen as peaceful in that the disagreements end peacefully.

I think you should ask yourself "how is this any different from starting a Discord server?" I'm not endorsing Discord, I just want you to think about why someone would jump through hoops to join your super secret nostalgia group when they could start their own in a few clicks. What are you offering that's worth putting myself at the mercy of you and your existing friend group deciding I'm riff-raff and throwing me out? I can get that on any forum with less effort. Are you sharing content that isn't available elsewhere? Useful services that other sites don't mimic? In-depth discussion of something that often goes neglected elsewhere? What are you selling other than "ugh, 90s internet was so much better"? You can't build a strong community on nothing but excluding "the bad ones". At least without defining clearly who the people you're focused on hating are.

Greetings. I will reply to this properly later. I just wanted to thank you for taking the time. I'll explain the good and bad points of IPFS later. But for now the main difference is basically this; On IPFS the entire world is a HDD/"cloud" you can access as if it's on your local machine. Once something is stored on there it's there forever as long as someone in the world has a copy of it.

For starters; You wouldn't be banned at the whims of some anonymous moderation or change in policy. Discord is awful for just about everything it does. One of the worst things about it is the fact that it killed off forums and wikis. When it isn't even a good format for that type of content. The amount of times I've been forced to join a random discord server for a binary file only to find it hidden behind a private channel that requires handing over a cell phone number+interview with a moderator or whatever has really driven me nuts over the last several years. Before about 2016 I could simply visit a wiki on http or an old forum thread. Worst case I had to make a temp. email to download an attachment.

I don't hate anyone. Even those I disagree with. I hate the fact that the internet has been rolled into a corporate monster where people freely hand over their personal information to be data mined in exchange for access to stuff that is much worse than what we had 20 years ago.

I don't expect people to jump through hoops. It would be as easy as getting invited to some discord server. The main difference is it wouldn't be plastered all over the web where it would eventually attract the wrong type of attention and get us censored/ddos'd/taken down. No one can send mass spam to the host claiming loli = pizza if they don't know the place exists in the first place. We don't have to worry about all those usual problems if we keep a low profile as a community.

A place where data can be compiled and shared openly without the fear of it all getting nuked one day because someone somewhere decided they didn't like the place. That's my main goal anyway.

It's so bad now that people that weren't there for the 90s-2000s era web 1.0 and early web 2.0 have no idea just how bad things are now. Back then the web (and greater internet) was this interesting place that felt new and exciting. Every day you would stumble upon something interesting. People would actually make connections with each other and speak openly. They weren't self-censoring to avoid the ban hammer everywhere or afraid they'd lose their job over something they posted. People back then were actually smart enough to follow the

I just think we can do better is all. We _really_ need a place where we can share content with each other and archive it. Private trackers and hidden channels on discord with encoded links to corporate cloud hosting is not the way to go about this. In fact it's much worse than what we had before: ftp, xdcc, early open torrent trackers and even all the old p2p networks. In those old days by now people said the internet would be fully p2p. It's designed to be fully p2p. But instead of having more access to open data/information we've regressed where now all the data is stored on a handful of companies server farms. We lose a little more ground every year. Things are hand to find now. The search engines are basically advertisements for paid links. The data is locked away behind multiple log-in and pay walls that want you to hand over a cell phone number to access the stuff. These so-called super sekrit private trackers are keeping IP logs and other personal information about their users stored in a database that is just sitting there waiting for someone to come along and copy it. People don't share openly anymore. People don't produce OC anymore. Even the funny pictures have @twitter/instagram usernamed plastered all over them because people are chasing followers, clout and money.

Imagine if any of these large sites were in the hands of someone that wasn't trying to data mine, selling your private information to the highest bidder and constantly begging for donations despite making millions of dollars a year (wikipedia being prime example but there are so many more). Imagine if someone that actually cared and would protect the user's data and refused to allow censorship to appease advertisers owned one of these large social networks. Don't you think they world would be a better place?

There is a good reason why no one like that owns something like facebook, twitter, reddit, 4chan or all the other places. Everyone like that was run off the web in various ways. I personally watched google adsense kill nearly every large forum on the web in the span of just a couple of years. All the owners/admins were warned. But those $10k+ monthly checks for letting their users be data mined were too tempting. Once google had mined the user data for a couple of years they started herding said users away from those independent websites and into the emerging social networks like myspace, facebook, reddit and others. A few years later all those forums were ghost towns and people were scrambling to sell them off on places like webhostingtalk while they could still get some sucker to purchase them.

All that said: The tools/software we're using to access most things through the web these days is also really really horribly designed. The UIs suck. The phone-first designs suck. The fact that they all pipe data through places like cloudflare (thus making the entire point of https pointless) sucks. We can do better.
