Pretty sure I picked up programming from watching New Game!, sufficed to say it's stuck to me.

A podcast I used to listen to a lot used to quote Dune frequently, like "The sleeper has awakened" -- this was prior to the movie -- and this got me interested in reading it. I had heard lots about audio books, and around that time was I big into listening to old radio dramas, so I decided to listen to the audio book version (which I would highly recommend the Audio Renaissance version. It's very good). After finishing it, it got me interested in the rest of the series, which got me back into reading. Admittedly, I didn't end up reading the rest of the Dune series but started reading lots of light novels instead.

I picked up learning Japanese after years of deep immersion into anime and eromanga.

I picked up drinking after watching the beer episode in SSR.

To answer my own thread, I've been getting into gardening the past few years and the motivation had primarily been the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons/Rune Factory games. Although I do have memories of my parents growing stuff in the backyard (dad grew up on a farm) it was mostly just something in my memories that I thought about occasionally.
But, in these games watching the crops grow through my (simplified) effort was really nice. I could also turn the crops into food and talk to the villagers about stuff. It's a series of games that really seems incomprehensible that people would choose to spend time on, it's just "work", right?

One of the things video games offer that real life doesn't always have is the concept that your work will pay off, and is also something that I've heard applied to gardening. So, well, I started doing it. Complaints of mine like the Tilling action taking an absurd amount of Stamina makes a lot more sense now that I've done it in real life.
