Or at least, that's my assumption given the ending. Everything about Pete disappears and he's replaced with Fred discovering 'Alice' is his Wife Renee. Going on a rampage and promptly killing Mr. Eddy, who I assume is Dick Laurent and then leading to the beginning of the movie where he tells the intercom "Dick Laurent is dead". Although how that works in the beginning, I'm not sure. Maybe it's more like a fever dream or something?
