They say be the change you want to see, and that if you like something you should support it. So I preordered the MahoAko BD boxes including the limited edition one with the Baiser fig. Here's hoping we get more series that similarly strive for greatness and ecchi in the future.

https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/gp/product/B0CSKQYYDF

Kinda wish I had money 10 years ago like I do now to freely spend on BDs... Could've started amassing a collection a whole lot earlier and I'm sure there's a bunch of limited edition ones that I'll never be able to get my hands on. The effect buying them would have towards the old production would probably be minimal as well. Though, if I were to venture forth and try to make up for lost time while NEETing around does /qa/ know of any good place to find older stuff, or is it just eBay and Amazon? On that topic too, how much into merch or BD buying is /qa/?

 No.119862

Solaris has older stuff(depending on what you mean by old). I got a Last Exile Fam the Silver Wing art book and also some older Fumos(such as Hong Meiling).

I just can't believe how expensive this stuff is. You used to see VHS tapes and DVDs stuff in nerd rooms, but these days you mostly see manga (or just the old VHS and DVDs) because BDs are just way too ridiculous. They should come with figures like that are bare minimum at that kind of price and also a signed autograph thanking the buyer.
They really can't ever complain about sales when they're aimed at such a limited market.

the most revolutionary part of this anime is that it's selling better than anything else with loliservice, studio execs seeing this should take note that you need not pander to western or norm sensibilities to make an anime sell

These disks are getting some damn good numbers. I checked out the Mato Seihei no Slave BDs as well since it suggested them and each of those was saying only +50 each. And we're barely past the halfway point.
But no, I don't buy anything myself, at all, I've no purchasing power to do so.

Hmmm... none of them are showing any numbers. I suppose it's to be expected that the first cour's BDs would've been sold over a month ago, and I'm not gonna extrapolate about the second. Although Kusuriya does show about 500 total, so eh. Oh, and the text in question happens to be in English for whatever reason.

I saw somewhere predictions that the BD sales were passing 15k, which assuming an average of $200 per sale would mean about 3 mil in revenue from BD sales alone. Pretty good for sequel potential.

It's one of the rare shows where we know that the BD version will actually be better than the broadcast one. Most BDs nowadays are just the TV-versions on disk. BD sales make up a tiny fraction of total revenue nowadays. This show's profits from its BDs will probably unusually large. But that makes the numbers a bit unrepresentative.

How do we know that? The broadcast one is already uncensored, so what guarantees are there that they'll majorly up the quality in the BDs?

That's great that DVDs are being made. I had no idea. The price thing would justify it, but I could also see a lot of Japanese people just holding onto the old technology. I could see myself filling a room with DVDs even if they're inferior to BDs, just to have a physical reminder to appreciate. I wonder if they still have menus or if it's sort of a lazy "better than nothing" kind of thing with minimum effort.

 No.120539

>>120016
Most are pretty good from what I've seen. DVDs are still the preferred medium for pre-HD era content. Since most BDs are garbage upscales or otherwise butchered in some way. I recently started working on archiving a 2000s era show and the BD is basically unwatchable. They didn't bother to deinterlace the DVD content before upscaling it to HD. So the BD has combing on every other frame in addition to bad art all around. The DVD isn't perfect but it's much better.

It's sad because they could do so much better with the space on a BD. You could put multiple seasons of an anime on one BD in SD format. Let the end user's hardware worry about upscaling it. It'll be a superior experience most of the time and it would improve with upgrades to media players and stand alone hardware. The average BD is a rip off especially if you're buying them in Japan where each disc only has a few episodes. I don't understand how they keep getting away with it.

A lot of times I'll buy the DVD instead of the BD just because it comes with extra content. You'd think the BDs would have more but I've found that not to be true. Especially for shows that got a DVD release 15+ years ago and a recent BD re-issue.

Remains to be seen but with the budget they're working on I don't expect the art to change much in the BD release.

Bumping this thread because it's related to the recent discussions about piracy.

Can we use it as a general buyfag thread? I saw this and thought it looked surprisingly good for cheap pop up parade stuff: https://goodsmileeurope.com/products/gse_g19258 I might buy it if the shipping isn't too expensive. She looks more expressive in that fig than she does in the show.

Wow, I had to do a double take and check if GSC is actually the manufacturer. They seem to have stepped up their game in however many years since I last bought something from them. This Holo looks pretty darn nice! The Pop Ups never held my attention before.

The closeup in >>122666 still carries the look of a prize-tier figure, but imo it's the top end of that grouping. The sculpting and paint are great. For the longest time I considered FuRyu to be the best when it comes to quality on a budget in prize territory, but it seems GSC has caught up.

Been using Solaris Japan and Ninoma as my go-to sources for figures for years. The way JP sellers take care of their stuff, when Solaris and Ninoma say "Pre-Owned" you might as well call it complete like-new-in-box, immaculate. Wide variety, huge discounts on Pre-Owned figures, and every time I buy from those 2 stores it's a stellar experience.

Perhaps it's time to pick up another scale fig since it's been quite a while. Window shopping is free though

Thanks for sharing this, definitely gonna order tomorrow. I really love the Pop Up Parade series since it typically has a great balance of quality and relatively low prices.

I bought the first MahoAko BD only to realize that I don't actually have any way to play it. I thought my old laptop (the only optical disc reader I currently own) could, but it turns out to only be able to do CDs and DVDs.
And thus both starts and ends my foray into collecting blu-rays.

The Kara no Kyoukai BD box set will be released for $400.

"What, indeed, is money?" I asked.

She flipped her long auburn hair with the casual elegance of a spider walking among snakes, and began to speak.

"Currency is a system that man has devised in order to give his efforts-- which you and I understand are ultimately meaningless on the astral scale, but the thrashing of a fly whose legs have yet to be torn off--"

(I recalled that like the dinosaurs, humanity would eventually be destroyed by some mundane natural occurrence like a meteor: we were too insignificant for gods to take notice of.)

"--value. The wealth number, such as it is, can be increased by work and decreased in exchange for goods and services, like our morning tea and the maid who brings it to us."

And indeed, the frills she wore. I understood this concept. It was like the use of male reproductive liquids in the magical world. In a corner of my mind, I began a series of calculations that would eventually result in my magical wealth number.
