A clip got recommended to me on youtube and reminded me that I absolutely love this anime. In terms of the typical shoujo today despite its influence I'd say it still stands out, and Anno's influence on the presentation through his direction (before the budget kinda goes kaput like EVA near the end) is strikingly impactful in conveying the mood of each scene and allowing the highs to reach further than manga ever could. Miyazawa's probably still my favorite Shoujo protagonist of any romance series, her smarts and unbreakable character make her extremely endearing to watch as situations arise throughout her and Arima's school life as a result of their relationship. It's a great exploration of two quite different characters who take interest with and build each other up as they go about life and maturing.

So with that in mind I'm going to be streaming the first 10 episodes of KareKano April 6th, or next Sunday, at 7:00PM EST. Only the first 10 because I feel like that's the most crucial portion of the story that sets into motion everything else. The setup, main cast, and character relations for the most part are established after that and it's more digging deeper into them that we can stream maybe some other time if people want me to. Be sure you're there for it!

Oh, and on https://theatre.kissu.moe/kiss/yukkuri of course

>(before the budget kinda goes kaput like EVA near the end)
From what I could gather, it seems both were actually caused by production issues independently of budget, through last minute re-dos, changes in direction, and the like. This was 1998 post-EoE Gainax, and as far as I know at this point merchandise sales are giving them buttloads of monaaay, a very different situation from 1995.
And yes, I agree that it's an incredible show.

Oh huh, I always thought it was a budget thing, but yeah makes sense that after EVA that wouldn't really be possible. Wonder why they didn't just delay it like anime now do.

Reminder it's in 2 days, at 3:00PM

Did you forget?

Ah, I did. This is why I need to have a better time... Well, consider it rescheduled to 7:00 PM. That should fare better for keeping me from forgetting.

Just the first 10, good enough to get the foundation and everything.

If it were all 26 I certainly would've started earlier.

I really think something that probably makes the style of KareKano so good, and more than that older and more standout anime in general. It's the experimentation with different styles without any assurance that it'll work or not. It's not following any layout for how you should animate, and that works towards its benefit because the director, Anno, knows how to be creative in the right way.

Trying to think of the last anime that I found to be pretty nice and experimental a bit in terms of animation. I think maybe Oshi no Ko could count for certain scenes, but in terms of having it be something pertaining to the whole, bocchi is probably more appropriate

onk uses different styles in the same way that shonen does, for a whole scene or stretch and it does so with a lot of seriousness
bocchi is indeed closer to karekano in that it's a generally shorter and a lot more spread out, there's more instances of it throughout and with greater variation
nigewaka does have a fair bit of variety as well in its alternative styles

This is the kind of show I struggle to start watching on my own, but it was pretty good. Lots of funny faces between some genuinely good serious stuff. I can see why someone succeeded in forcing it on [s4s].
