Yes and no. The guys behind Xenogears went onto create Xenosaga and Xenoblade, but Square is really, really stingy with the Xenogears IP and won't let Monolith Soft officially do anything with Xenogears. Legally, Xenoblade cannot explicitly connect to Xenogears.

This hasn't stopped Takahashi from rehashing Xenogears though, Xenoblade 2 in particular is very much a rehash of Perfect Works (his original plan from the 1990s to make Xenogears into a trilogy), there's a ton of parallels between XB2 and XG.

Xenoblade 2 may or may not be canonically connected to Xenosaga though in some weird metaverse way (Bamco's lets Monolith Soft use the Xenosaga IP still, fortunately), and Xenosaga is supposed to be connected to Xenogears despite legal issues.

 No.74879

File:Xenosaga Zohar Xenoblade 2….jpg (104.21 KB,1981x719)

>>74878
Adding to this, so technically if Monolith doubles down on Xenoblade being connected with Xenosaga rather than just teasing the possibility, then Xenoblade is connected with Xenogears since Xenosaga is heavily implied to be connected to Xenogears.

 No.79380

File:[SubsPlease] Gyakuten Seka….jpg (174.84 KB,1280x720)

There's at least ==FIVE of them this season, so what do you think? Megaton-kyuu Musashi, Muv-Luv, Sakugan, Gyakuten Sekai no Denchi Shoujo, and Kyoukai Senki.
Muv-Luv is a VN adaptation obviously so no one should watch that unless they've read all of it which can be a tall order. I'll read it eventually...
Musashi is based on a video game and didn't spark any interest in me.
Sakugan looks like it's going to be filled with a whole lot of suffering, but could be great. I don't think I want to deal with one of those shows right now.
Denchi Shoujo has a VERY cute girl in it and seems decent enough at the moment. Very bizarre story and I'm curious to see how crazy things get.
Kyoukai Senki is another one of those 'honorable Japanese must expel conquering foreigners' things and doesn't interest me.

Megaton Musashi is on the super robot style of mecha, lots of technobabble and shouting out the HISSATSU WAZAs and such.

Potentially building a complex story with a lot of characters, but we'll see where it goes. Could end up completely flopping, you never know.

 No.79390

>>79388
I think the biggest problem with Musashi is that it's a mecha that had no mecha in the first episode. I might give it a try, but how do you do that?

 No.79391

>>79390
yeah, they've had some really weird directional choices so far. Like you said, no mecha action in the first episode, despite that (at least so far) being a pretty big focus of the show. And they keep doing previews that end up having very little to do with the next episode. Feels like they're flying by the seat of their pants sometimes.

 No.79397

>>79380
I think for what I'll be keeping up with Sakugan and Denchi Shoujo are what I'll be keeping up with. I'll probably save Muv-Luv for when it comes out on BD so that I can watch it all at once.

Also it's pretty crazy that in a single season there's potentially 5 above average mecha, and 3 that have really high potential. Wonder if it's starting to make a comback.

Also 86 s2 is airing if anyone's watching that, which I was somewhat excited for but now I'm not so sure after seeing that they copped out from having the main character die and be converted to the legion.

86 P2 is actually probably my favorite mecha out of the bunch this season. Gyakuten is nice as well, but I wasn't as wowed by megaton as I'd hoped and I'm waiting for Muv-Luv to finish for me to marathon it. Also Sakugan isn't all too good either. Reminds me a lot of Outlaw Star, nice but with issues. It's got a really nice OP/ED though, also like Outlaw Star.

 No.80751

I feel like Megaton Musashi may have gone a little overboard on characters. We're now up to the 3 original pilots, the newtype kid, the 2 girls, and there may even be a secret 4th megaton-class coming for the nerd and the android. It's been hinted that Minami-mommy is going to have some sort of big backstory that we haven't even scratched the surface of. On top of that, we have the alien girl's story, and her knights may even become significant characters.

It feels like the plot has barely even started yet because we've spent 80% of every episode on character introductions.

File:[SubsPlease] Sakugan - 08 ….jpg (196.12 KB,1920x1080)

I kinda expected better of Sakugan this season. The episodes before were alright and showed some form of promise, but then the most recent one came along and was hot garbage. There's a thing called foreshadowing and development that was completely ignored in the leadup to this episode. Nothing that happened could really be pieced together by all the backstory hinted at, and it comes out of nowhere. Not only does it come out of nowhere, but also the new conflict gets resolved immediately this episode as well, rendering most of what happened a shoehorned in waste of time to force backstory and development. Missing out on any of the gratification the viewer could possibly have had from all of this being built up beforehand and having payoff here. What a disaster.

 No.81050

>>81036
I'm glad to see Industrial Light and Magic still exists. Those guys were behind so many amazing special effects in the 90s. If anyone could pull it off, it's those guys. In our sad age of Western studios moving on from the drained corpse of comic books and into Japanese media, this one has the best chance of actually looking good. I have no confidence anything else about it, but the special effects have great potential.

Kong: Skull Island was a pretty nice movie with great special effects, and with the same director heading this project I think it could turn out well if they try and adapt a more campy Gundam plotline instead of including all the rest of the military drama. Megaton Musashi's really taking off in these later episodes. In a lot of ways, the goofy stuff earlier makes it even more sad when the characters die. After realizing that "Doll's Frontline" show was just "Girl's Frontline" under a different name for some reason I decided to travel back to the past to get my fix of android girls and re-watch Saber Marionette J instead. It is considered a classic and one of the defining shows of the 90s in Japan, so it is somewhat unknown in the West in comparison. It's nothing too amazing, but I'd say it's definitely a must watch if you are into android girls like me. And it has some mecha elements here and there if you don't consider androids alone to be mecha, so don't worry. The show is pretty much a blend of everything; harem, comedy, slice of life, sci-fi/mecha, etc. Some people are 'filtered' by the artstyle and use it as an excuse as to not watch it, but it doesn't look as exaggerated in the anime as it does in the manga or promotional art, trust me.

Those are bad people whose opinions do NOT matter. The charm of that style has never waned for me, and the nice shading/colors that accompany it will always keep nice to look at. I can only imagine that those who dislike it probably have something against more cartoonish anime styles in general.

Yeah, it is mostly recognizable on Cherry who has some very 90s design with the huge air intakes, huge eyes, etc, but she doesn't look like that in the show. I'm not very familiar with this show's history, so I could be completely wrong, but I get the impression it's one of those cases where the creator is an inferior draftsman to the people animating his work. The result is this kind of weird compromise, where they kept a lot of the idiosyncrasies of the original but polished it up to work in animation.

Personally, I think it looks pretty good though. Styles like this are the visual equivalent of spicy foods. They're harder to swallow, especially if you didn't have much exposure to them growing up, but if you stick with them you'll find a lot to appreciate.

So is it true that CGI mechs are actually more expensive to make than 2D? Because if that's true then I have no idea why any studio would choose to do CG over 2D. Unless you've got a Hollywood budget you're not going to be able to make something that looks as good as nice 2D mechs.

If not then I wonder why this crappy isekai got the budget for 2D mecha.

It is true that CGi is more expensive than hand drawn in general, but I think it's going to depend on the quality of the CGi. It's harder to draw a car or a mecha than to just model them in 3D. And most of it looks like garbage you'd see in a PS2/PS3 game (no offense to Zone of Enders or the Armored Core series).

 No.88818

>>88814

I think the reasoning is because with designs like these, studios often take on a mechanical design person to help with how something should look and move, whereas most animators probably only have experience with static shots and/or human designs. So, it's easier to just slap in a few dozen cg cars than drawing them because all of the intensive perspective work is already done by virtue of it being 3D cg.

 No.88820

>>88818
Yeah, but as to which would be more expensive that's a tough question to answer. The 3D cars/mecha in anime look like complete shite. It's not like it's CGi on the level of Pixar or something.

 No.88821

>>88820
CG strikes me as being more expensive. Even if the model never changes, you'd still need to maintain a completely parallel staff in order to do all of the cg animation which is pretty time consuming. For mecha, that is. It wouldn't surprise me if there's a common industry program for dropping in CG cars and other common, high detail assets.

 No.88822

But really, the cost is pretty ambiguous. Which would ultimately be more expensive:
¥maintaining/contracting out a CG staff and all that entails
¥having a few dedicated mechanical design animators

Not necessarily! Shows like Gad Guard and some Brave series entries like J-Decker that are mostly sentient mecha count too! Power armor, sentient robots, and the works all count as being part of the mecha genre; generally a good litmus test is whether or not the series has appeared in a main-line Super Robot Wars game. Yes, they are not practical. To make a mech practical you would make it prone so it was a smaller target and easier to hide and so you had less area to worry about armouring, then you would remove the arms and place the weapon on it's back in some kind of turret, you would remove the legs and give it tracks and then you just have a tank anyway.
The only uses for a mech/walker type thing would be in moving heavy weapons over terrain tanks can't operate in like a walking cannon to operate in mountains. Though some terrain would be even worse for a mech than a tank, like muddy ground as the mech would have more ground pressure. And also the other use would be in exo-skeleton type systems that would enable a soldier to fight much more protected, though that has issues as well but in some situations it might work.

I'm not really sure how they're going to wrap up everything in just 4 episodes, this feels like the middle turning point for a normal Gundam series. Miorine's reputation is in tatters, the school is up in flames, and tenshions have reached a boiling point between space and earth.

 No.109168

>>109167
There's no way it's ending in 4 episodes. There will be a season 2, possibly with a time skip in between.

...r-right? ;_;

 No.109172

of course, it's Gundam. Expect 52 episodes and then with another development plotline of 52 episodes

actually it would be pretty weird if this gundam was just 24 eps, especially when it seems to be the most financially successful gundam for bandai in a long while

You know, on the scale of Gundam atrocities, Prospera really hasn't committed that much worse than her predecessors. She's just a loving mother!

I know its not UC, but I'm a bit surprised Gundam has never addressed atrocity fatigue

Apparently the field she used is called an NT-D System and it's the most wide ranged one to date.

Thinking of going and seeing the new Transformers movie, only because I am a huge Beast Wars fan (I've even seen the anime series of em) to the point I think I could tolerate a human subplot.

Transformers is one of those weird things that honestly reminds me of furry fandom, where it's a western thing with kind of a different but still familiar presence in Japan so it's not exactly a westaboo thing. This used to be very common with almost everything pre-internet but still has a couple of things like this.

And no, I don't have any of the toys, if I'm gonna buy toys it'll probably be lego or gunpla because the model experience is much more fun than just buyfagging for display.

Although reading about it, even though audiences and fans love it, the autobots and decepticons still existing and interacting with them is weird to me when the whole point is that it's the far future and humans may be extinct. But canon is fluid in this series and everything is explained away with things in being different timelines.

It was pretty good overall as an anime, but I don't think there was much there to make me say that it was something spectacular. The end was a bit clusterfucky but that's most Gundams. Although maybe the main issue is that this is about half the length of a usual Gundam season so they seemed to have to rush through things at points.

But hey, people loved it and because of that Gundam gained some traction and popularity back so I'm happy it exists. Glad that it ended on proper yuri too.

Pretty good show, but seriously MASSIVE amount of wasted potential. At the time I loved the parts in the first half that were basically Utena with robots, but in retrospect it would be much better if they spent less time on that and more time fleshing out the world. Feels like the first cour was paced like a 50 episode show and then they had to rush things when the actual plot set into motion. I was hoping there would be a timeskip and another 2 cour season but they already did a timeskip in the last episode and there's no sequel hook.

I imagine they will have decided on making a spinoff/game or that Sunrise doesn't want to focus on anime much anymore.

 No.110566

>>110556
I mean this anime has been the most successful for Sunrise in decades so they probably are punching themselves for making it only 24 eps.

I didnt like it. It didnt make sense and just felt like nostalgia bait when its not even that nostalgic as Beast Wars has content currently coming out for it. S2 of Beast Wars is a better movie.

I also noticed a trend in the fandom, where the japanese stuff is seen as deeper and more adult when for the most part it's lighter, sillier and very meta. Like a parody toku series.

Also, even in their own Japanese media, they are associated with the west, I think it would be cool if they crossed over with something like Zoids or GaoGaiGar in an East vs West Goku vs Superman thing.
