will rika kill her best friend with a shard of glass? tune in for the next episode where we're finally caught up in the storyline again
No.943
>>942No way, if a master swordsman like Shion's mom can't hit her what makes you think Rika has a chance with a pathetic shard?
Also does she even have the shard if Satoko pulled out the sword in the span of the loop? Time should reset so that the entire sword is inside Oyashiro-sama and unless Satoko fucks up with the sword each time I really doubt Rika'll be able to always have that shard.
No.946
Even if there isn't some epic duel, it shows Rika's character and that it wasn't Satoko gaming her the whole time. The single misstep that she does of chipping the sword gives Rika a choice or control over an otherwise unknown situation. While it doesn't mean much, it foreshadows or develops her personality that Hanyu was describing as a protagonist who hasn't given up after centuries. She could have ended her life, but prioritizes an answer to the mystery. Even at the end where facing a choice between death or solution, she comes up with a theory that the maidens aren't allowed to leave the village, yet it has no evidence so she continues looking for an alternative which leads her to testing Satoko.
It's this thing that really gives her a real personality. Not just about her living out her joyful days in a highschool or funny execution scenes, it feels like it has a purpose to it that she's motivated to keep going because she values a resolution more than her life.
This sword fragment also shows Satoko's weakness as someone who's really poor at adapting to change and unknown situations. Her personality in the academy arc comes back to haunt her. When facing something that is outside of her expertise she blunders. This isn't that she's stupid, it's her poor habits that we see throughout the gou-sotsu series where when facing a challenge she tries to cheat or take shortcuts. Her determination gets her into situations but her focus on actually seeing them through to the end is extraordinarily weak.
This one 10 second scene with the sword shows the character's personalities perfectly and maybe even made the entire hike through 12 episodes of 'sort of' recap worthwhile.

Basically it finally started, and it only took about 35 episodes to get to it. It feels like all those episodes were the GIFs of the Higurashi anime's general reputation ("that anime with the cute girls killing each other?") but now we're finally getting somewhere!
>>946>yet it has no evidence so she continues looking for an alternative which leads her to testing Satoko. What do you mean by Rika testing Satoko?

>>947Sadly, based on prior witch battles I don't think Hanyuu has a chance against Featherine.

>>946Huh, I hadn't actually given thought to the idea that the left behind shard could have been anything but a mistake, but the significance of it having been makes a whole lot more sense now.

>>943Maybe the sword works in such a way that if it's broken in one fragment, it's broken across all fragments?
>>949Given her state in the OP, Hanyuu probably isn't going to win.

>>948Ohh, I remember that bear thing now. I don't remember if that was a purposeful test by Rika, though.
Hmm... I'd have to go watch it again

>>953Yeah, she doesn't seem particularly threatened by the goat monster. More amused than anything, honestly. I'm kind of looking forward to Hanyuu getting bullied next episode, I think it'll be entertaining.
