Why play something competitive if you are not going to be the best? or among the best, at least.

¨For fun¨ is the obvious answer but then you have a big skill gap between players. I don't play competitive online games anymore because I haven't been able to find an answer to this. I don't want to be a pro or anything, just good enough to think of myself as ¨good at the game¨. Whatever that game might be.

Instead, I've been playing Prominence Poker and MahSoul because those games are luck based and I can listen to a video or do something else while playing.

What do you think?

Not really, no. Sports are always fun to play and that was the most fitting image in my folder I could find.

Yes, I used to play them when I was younger ¨competitively¨ for fun with others. But recently I got into this dilemma where it feels like a 2nd job to play them. There are people complaining about Fall Guys being full of tryhards, for example, so I feel like there's no in between. I tried a bunch of them.

Another example >>3097 says it's better to play 20 different characters for fun but I would be frustrated if someone wins convincingly against me not because I'm losing but because I'd think I'm not playing THE game properly at the highest level where I think the real fun is. This doesn't happen to me when I try to do something creative like drawing or playing an instrument at all because I don't view it as a competition.
I get bored of things after getting good at them, that's why poker and mahjong are fun right now, you can get better at them but nothing is guaranteed.

I think even if you're not going to be globally competitive, you can always be competitive in these games amongst your friend groups. That's kinda where I think a fair bit of fighting games lie, played peer-to-peer among friends in private lobbies when they're not going at online.

Focusing on the destination instead of the path doesn't seem like the right attitude to me, former will come naturally if you're mindful of the latter. Being mindful of it means playing to improve instead of just playing, and if you don't enjoy playing that way you won't get very far either.
So if you're not enjoying the process of improving and expanding your understanding of the game you might as well stop playing, if getting good is your goal that is. Mahjong would be a good example to compare the two ways of playing: just playing, for fun; and the way you'd do it to improve - by reading books on the game as well as playing, maybe watching replays if those are a thing.

This year was the first time I ordered groceries online and had it delivered to the door. It's really weird and feels futuristic. It's not good for everything, such as wanting to actually look at raw vegetables or just browsing, but it's really nice. I even ordered some frozen yogurt to see what would happen and it came in some layered cardboard pouch thing that did a great job of keeping it cool. There's also subscription options so it happens automatically, but I think I'm going to hold off on doing that for now. I've also started ordering some bulk cereal and protein bars on amazon and it seems pretty efficient. I think I'm going to look up to see if Costco supports this stuff.
When I told my mom about it she said this stuff is bad for society because people need to go out and socialize and I don't think she's wrong exactly, but not everyone enjoys being surrounded by people. *cough*

Have you done this stuff before? I think I'm late the party in trying it.

I find it hard to believe that this way of ordering is more convenient than just going to the shop. There's no way the technology is that bullshit-free. It sure sounds like subscribing to your weekly groceries and getting them on your doorstep would be better, but then if you think it through:
¥ you have to be at home at the time or else your groceries are right there for anyone to steal
¥ using the app is a pain in the ass
¥¥ and of course it's only available as some kuso phone app
¥ if you don't consume as fast as you get them delivered then it's a hassle
¥ what's displayed as available is not going to match what's actually available the way it necessarily does in the physical store

I don't order groceries online, but this isn't true at all from my experience. I live close to the store so I just do the few minutes walk at non-peak hours, but I have tried it a fair bit.
If your groceries are at risk of being stolen, you live in a bad neighbourhood. That's the real problem. You don't have to use an app, there's a simple shopping website online. You can schedule the delivery time period and choose between delivery at door (ring doorbell, not allowing it to be set at doorstep if you're not home), or delivery at doorstep (ideal for hikis to take inside a few minutes after delivery man leaves).
The store is very good at displaying what's in stock and ready to deliver today/tomorrow or what will cause there to be a delivery delay.
I never had a bad experience with the service I used anyways, but I do live in a small country. It's not particularly expensive either, but I prefer just going to the store than planning ahead. It's a good service to have though, I used it a lot during 2020.

My parents used to do this, but I don't like it, personally. This kind of service is really only possible because of underpaid and overworked labour. If delivery drivers had better working conditions then no one would pay for it. Even if you ignore the worker's rights angle, the delivery drivers, in my experience, have such tightly wound schedules that if you're near the end of their route the delivery can be extremely late.

I think a fair amount of people have seen this recommended or linked to them by others, but it hasn't been linked here! I watched all of it over a few days and it was pretty good. It's nice to see him doing voiced videos again because from what I understand he was overwhelmed by the success/viralness of the A Press video and kind of went away for a while. The fact that he did video with his voice while knowing it will receive a lot of attention means he conquered that anxiety. His idea of monetization with the part at 3:37:40 (https://youtu.be/YsXCVsDFiXA?t=13063) is also quite interesting.
TJ "Henry" Yoshi is even in there in the comments with a donation ($50, pretty good) that made me smile.

How is your sleep routine? I'm thinking I need to improve mine. Strangely I've found that having my little tablet thing playing a youtube speedrun history video helps me get sleepy faster. My theory is that it interrupts my thinking and allows my brain to turn off faster. It doesn't increase the amount of sleep I get, but at least it starts earlier so there's less wasted time doing nothing in bed.

Sometimes, people are not so much talking to exchange information as to feel connected, and somehow, in a tragic way, this phenomenon got imported to the internet. People try to touch base with others in the digital world. But no matter how much people socialize on facebook, their need for human contact will never be satisfied - which is why early (non-political) facebook was already so addictive.
Many youtubers are the same thing, fundamentally, a seeming quenching of the said basic need, but ultimately not satisfactory.
And this goes for both sides of the youtuber scene. Both the creators as well as the audience are convinced that they have something that they are still desperately in want of.

So when you ask "why did you make a seven hours video to meander around a message that could have been conveyed in thirty minutes?"
The correct answer is: "I was lonely".
Same reason as why anyone would watch it.

This is true but we also have to consider how youtube monetization has changed over the years. Creators put a lot of ads in between those videos and receive revenue according to the time viewers spend watching their channel. It's not just about views anymore.
That's why you get a lot of video essays with unnecessary fluff on purpose like anon said. If you see a video on your recommended that barely gets past the 8,10 15, minute mark (i don't remember exactly how it works but they let you add more mid roll ads past a certain length) they are highly likely going to be trashy or slop. It's more like a side job for a lot of people at this point instead of a place to broadcast yourself for fun but we all know that.

I just wanted to re-learn how to edit a clip in davinci, but it's impossible to actually find the information. Google is just a bunch of AI garbage and youtube nonsense that is 30 minutes long to explain something that would take one entire sentence.
I don't know how anyone learns a new skill in this hellscape of noise.

Then I remembered a tip where you add "+reddit" to search reddit for humans sharing information for the benefit of other humans and I found it within seconds. This is going to be patched out, isn't it? Everything else is already drowned out.

Every now and then people like to talk about future human evolution, that humans hundreds of thousands and millions of years from now humanity may be a completely new species that does not resemble a modern human any longer. Do you think so?

Personally, I'm inclined to believe that evolution is like language. When there is a strong social fabric connecting one person and community to the next, languages evolve very slowly. When that cohesion breaks down, languages tend to diverge and evolve. I think evolution is probably something like that, and within our broader interconnected world, humanity will probably evolve more slowly together and so maybe that human born hundreds of thousands and millions of years from now will resemble us much more than others like to suggest.

From what I understand, sleep serves a few functions, that we know of. First is detoxification. While you're awake, toxins build up in the brain, and restful sleep allows the body to detoxify the brain. The second is memory consolation. It seems that during sleep our brains essentially go through a categorization process where things that happened during the day that were in your "medium-length" memory get turned into long-term memories. Third is healing. Wheen you sleep your body releases hormones that allows for you to heal.

I'm pretty sure those are the main reasons. I'm just a layman though.
